The Hotel Congress: Dillinger Slept Here

The Hotel Congress is a local historic building and landmark, though its chief claim to fame has been that the infamous bank robber, John Dillinger, was captured there in January of 1934. John Dillinger and his gang were heros of a sort during the Depression and the police of several states and the FBI had been unable to capture him. So Tucson was rather proud of its police for making the capture.

Which as it turned out was temporary. Dillinger and his gang later escaped from an Indiana jail and in July of 1934, Dillinger was shot dead in Chicago by the FBI, outside a movie theater where he had watched a gangster movie starring Clark Gable.

One of the FBI agents wrote later:“Probably I will never forget, although I would like to, the morbidness displayed by the people who gathered around the shooting. Craning necks of curious persons, women dipping handkerchiefs in Dillinger’s blood. Neighborhood business boomed temporarily. The spot where Dillinger fell became the mecca of morbidly curious.”

yeah sounds morbid...but I don't understand, the usual reaction when you hear of a death of a gangster is one of happiness, feeling of satisfaction that atlast he will never be able to harm anyone else again...but women dripping handkerchiefs on his blood...that's a bit strange to me.
