Diamondback Bridge

This is a pedestrian walkway/bikeway which is designed to look like a diamondback rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes are poisonous, fairly common in the desert around Tucson and have a tail that makes a rattling noise when they shake it as a warning. I can vouch for it being a scary noise from firsthand experience.

Anyway there has been some controversy about the bridge. It was hit twice by trucks during construction. Some people consider it to be a silly idea for a bridge. Some people think a lot of public money was spent on it that could have been spent on more important things. Personally I really like the bridge but I have to be a little ambivalent about the cost. I suppose its the old public art vs functional for the public good argument though this bridge is supposed to be functional art.

The head is on the right in the larger photo and enlarged - it even has fangs! - in the smaller photo. Supposedly the eyes light up (at night?).

I do agree with you, there has to be more art, better yet, functional art in the layout and infrastructure of cities. I have been to places were they forgot to build parks and anything that look like art, and let me tell you, these are horrible places to visit. I can not imagine living there.

Art that makes people smile or takes their minds to a different place beyond getting and spending or reminds that there is more in the universe than just those streets.
